About Classes

What will you learn in a beginner class?
Our beginner classes offer a friendly environment to introduce students to Taoist Tai Chi Society† internal arts and methods. In a beginner class you will progressively learn the sequence of moves of Taoist Tai Chi Society taijiquan, the art of longevity and health. One of our accredited volunteer instructors will demonstrate each move and give you guidance on how to perform them. Within 4-5 months of weekly classes you will learn all 108 moves of the set.

Is it okay to visit and watch?
We invite you to visit any of our classes to see the 108 movements of the Taoist Tai Chi Society taijiquan set. At our beginner classes, you can observe how students are introduced step by step to the moves. Visiting a continuing class will give you the opportunity to see the entire set performed by a group. Classes meet throughout the week.

What should I wear?
No prescribed clothing needs to be purchased. However, we recommend that you wear comfortable loose fitting pants and comfortable shoes. Most people wear sneakers. Wearing shoes with heels is not recommended.

Beginner classes have already started. Is it too late to join?
No. You can join a beginners class at any time. You simply learn the set from that point. The moves taught from previous classes can be learned through repetition. Each class usually reviews the set from the very first move to what has been taught thus far. Also, a new beginner class will usually start again when the class you are in finishes the set. Just do the best you can. We don't compete against each other, and there are no tests.  You may also attend other classes during the week, which will likely be at different points in the set.

What if I miss a class?
That's fine. We all miss classes from time to time. Each class usually reviews the set from the very first move to what has been taught thus far. Don't forget you may also attend other classes scheduled throughout the week. If you know that you will miss a class, as a courtesy, inform your instructor.

Who attends our classes?
Our classes are attended by a diverse group of people of all ages, ranging from teenagers to seniors. We offer a friendly, welcoming environment for people of all physical abilities to learn and practice tai chi at their own pace.

What does it cost?
The Society depends on the contributions of its members. Though the contributions are voluntary donations, it is our hope that you will support the Society at suggested levels so that we can continue to make the benefits of Taoist Tai Chi Society internal arts and methods available to as many people as possible. Membership entitles you to attend as many classes as you wish. Information about membership may be obtained by contacting us at 419 537-0131  or toledo.oh@taoist.org.

What happens after the beginning class?
Taoist Tai Chi Society internal arts of health are taught on a noncompetitive basis. After completing the beginner course, continuing classes offer an opportunity for more intensive practice and refinement. You will learn Foundation Exercises, and refine underlying principles and movements. Learning Taoist Tai Chi Society internal arts including Tai Chi is a life-long process in which one discovers many layers of development. With diligent daily practice you will notice changes in your physiology. As you change, your instructor will guide you in adjustments in your Tai Chi practice to achieve further progress.

In addition to regular classes, we periodically offer Workshops and Intensives, which are led by highly experienced local and visiting instructors.
